Epidendrum or Star Orchid (Epidendrum)

This extremely bright and unusual Star Orchid or Epidendrum is a true embodiment of tropical sunshine and joy of life! Unlike classic phalaenopsis, this orchid stands out with its unique growth habit – it forms long, reed-like stems (pseudobulbs) covered with clusters, at the tips of which dense and extremely colorful star-shaped flower clusters bloom in a wide variety of colors. It is a dynamic, flowering, and very expressive houseplant that will add a bold, colorful, and exotic natural accent to any interior. It is an ideal and delightful gift for any orchid collector and flowering plant lover who wants to expand their botanical horizons!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and some direct sunlight. For the epidendrum to produce its magnificent flower clusters, it needs a large amount of light (much more than ordinary orchids). A south, southeast, or southwest windowsill is an absolutely ideal choice. Healthy plant leaves may develop a slight reddish or bronze tint in strong light – this is normal and indicates sufficient light!

• 💧 Watering: Abundant but infrequent! Since this plant often grows as an epiphyte in nature, its roots must breathe. Between watering, the substrate (fine orchid bark) should be allowed to dry well but not become dusty dry. The best method is to soak the pot in lukewarm water for 10-15 minutes, let it absorb water, and then drain all excess water. The plant’s roots must never sit in standing water, or they will rot very quickly.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Likes warmth during the day and slightly cooler air at night – these natural temperature fluctuations greatly stimulate flower bud formation. The plant will appreciate increased air humidity and good air circulation indoors, but avoid spraying water on flowers and leaves to prevent water accumulation and rot. In summer months, it can safely be taken outside to fresh air and sun on a terrace or balcony!

• 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly. This exotic star orchid is non-toxic and completely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 BEST LOCATION:

• Sunny windowsill in the living room or bedroom (where the plant will receive maximum sunlight for flower formation).

• Bright bathroom with a large window (an absolutely ideal environment if it has naturally high humidity and plenty of light).

• Sunny terrace or balcony in summer (where the plant can enjoy direct sun, natural breeze, and fresh air).

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen may differ slightly from the description. It is important to know a very interesting and exciting feature of epidendrums: small "babies" or keikis (young plants with their own roots) often start to form on their stems or even at the tips of old flower spikes. When these babies’ roots reach about 5 cm in length, they can be safely separated from the mother plant and planted separately, thus very easily propagating your orchid collection! Cut off spent flower spikes only when they are completely dried out and have turned brown and dry.
