Umbrella Papyrus or "Cyperus" (Cyperus alternifolius)

This graceful and extremely unusual Umbrella Papyrus (commonly called an indoor papyrus or cyperus) is a true water lover that will bring the atmosphere of African wetlands and the Nile River banks into your home! It stands out with tall, vertical stems topped with narrow, umbrella-like leaf rosettes. Unlike almost all other houseplants, this is one of the rare ones that literally cannot be overwatered! It is an airy, elegant, and very fast-growing houseplant that will add a dynamic green accent to any interior. It is an absolutely perfect gift for plant lovers who have the habit of accidentally "drowning" their green friends with too much love and water!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Bright, diffused light with some direct sunlight (especially morning or afternoon sun). To develop strong, straight stems and showy "umbrellas," it needs plenty of light. In too dark a spot, the stems will stretch, become weak, and break easily.

• 💧 Watering: Extreme and very abundant! This is a marsh plant that must be kept moist at all times. Golden rule: the pot should always stand in a saucer or decorative pot filled with water. If the soil dries out completely even for a short time, the stems and leaves will instantly turn yellow and wither.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives at standard room temperature and tolerates slightly cooler rooms in winter (not below 10–12°C). It will, of course, appreciate increased air humidity and misting, but as long as its "feet" (roots) are always in water, it will survive excellently even in dry indoor air.

• 🐾 Pets: Friendly, but protect the plant! This papyrus is non-toxic and completely safe for cats and dogs. However, note that cats literally adore this plant and treat it as very tasty grass, so it often becomes a pet snack if not placed in a safe spot.

🏠 BEST LOCATION:

• Bright bathroom with a window (an absolutely excellent place for this water and humidity lover).

• Bright windowsill in the living room or kitchen (placed in a deep container with water where it can safely and freely stretch out).

• Balcony, terrace, or conservatory in summer (during warm months it can be safely taken outside and even placed in a decorative garden pond).

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen may differ slightly from the picture. Please note that this is a very fast-growing plant – if any stems turn yellow or bend over time, confidently cut them down to the soil! This will encourage new shoots to grow from the roots. An interesting fact: if you cut off the plant’s green "umbrella" (with a small piece of stem) and place it in a glass of water with the leaves facing down (roots up), new roots and shoots will soon sprout right from the center!
