Royal Fine-Leaved Lipstick Plant 'Japhrolepis' (Aeschynanthus japhrolepis)
Get ready to bring unparalleled tropical lightness, refined elegance, and the most enchanting cascade of flowers in the world of houseplants into your home – the stunning Fine-Leaved Lipstick Plant 'Japhrolepis' (Aeschynanthus japhrolepis)! This exclusive trailing plant, highly valued among enthusiasts of hanging gardens, is a true masterpiece of nature, distinguished from other lipstick plant varieties by its exceptionally delicate, lace-like, dense foliage. The plant’s greatest pride, magnet, and unique hallmark is its breathtaking architecture: tiny, narrow, glossy leaves in a rich emerald-green shade are arranged in a dense cascade along flexible, long, gently trailing stems. During the flowering period, bright tubular flowers in vivid red and orange-red shades bloom at the ends of the stems, emerging from darker calyx “tubes” and visually resembling lipstick extending from a tube. 'Japhrolepis' forms a perfectly lush, airy clump that can beautifully spill over the edges of the pot in a dense green waterfall. It is currently a beautifully established, strong, exceptionally dense, bushy, and stable 15–20 cm plant in a generously sized 12 cm pot. It is the most prestigious, tasteful, and unique gift for housewarmings, hanging pots, tall shelves, and anyone seeking the highest level of sophistication and delicate natural detail in their home!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright, abundant, but ABSOLUTELY indirect light. This is the main secret behind this plant’s dense foliage and abundant flowering: Aeschynanthus japhrolepis needs plenty of filtered light to preserve the lush green color of its delicate leaves and produce new flower buds at the ends of its stems (it will especially enjoy gentle morning sun). If the light is insufficient, the plant will not bloom and the stems will become sparse. Strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sunlight, which can quickly burn its delicate leaves. An east- or west-facing windowsill will suit it best.
-
💧 Watering: Moderate, regular, and very careful. Lipstick plants like consistent, light moisture, but they do not tolerate waterlogged soil or drowned roots. Water the plant thoroughly, but only when the top layer of soil (the upper 1–2 cm of the pot) has dried out between waterings. The soil in the pot should be pleasantly moist, like a wrung-out sponge. Since the plant is in a 12 cm pot, it will retain moisture well, but it strictly dislikes having its roots soak in standing water in the saucer, which can quickly cause leaf drop and root rot. Reduce watering slightly in winter. Water with lukewarm, soft water.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A heat-loving tropical inhabitant (ideally +18°C to +25°C). This fine-leaved lipstick plant greatly appreciates increased air humidity, so it will be grateful for placement near a humidifier or regular humidification of the air (do not spray directly onto the flowers). In winter, protect it from the dry, hot air of radiators and temperatures below +15°C!
-
🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly / Non-toxic. Lipstick plants are safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs, but because of their delicate cascading stems, it is still best to place them on higher shelves or in a hanging pot.
🏠 BEST LOCATION:
-
Bright shelves, bookcases, windowsills, and hanging pots, where these delicate green stems and vivid flowers can hang freely, serving as the main interior accent.
-
Modern, Scandinavian, or romantic-style interiors, where delicate natural textures create a cozy, warm, and harmonious atmosphere.
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 15–20 cm (a beautifully established, strong, exceptionally dense, bushy plant that is already visually very noticeable)
-
Pot diameter: 12 cm (a stable and generous volume that supports the development of a strong and healthy root system)
⚠️ Note and a dose of reality about lipstick plants: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the exact density of its delicate stems, as well as the number of flower stalks present at any given time, may vary slightly, creating a unique natural form. Since this is already a nicely established plant in a stable 12 cm pot, it is strong and will not require immediate repotting for some time. When you repot it in the future, ABSOLUTELY use a light, peat-based, airy, and well-draining houseplant or gesneriad soil mix with added perlite to provide the roots with oxygen and prevent water accumulation.
