Small Albuca (Albuca humilis)

This extremely unusual, delicate, and wonderfully fragrant South African bulb plant is a true botanical rarity that will amaze any plant lover! At first, it looks like a miniature, fleshy tuft of grass, but its true magic reveals itself during flowering. Under the right conditions, Albuca will produce flower stalks with beautiful, drooping, star-shaped flowers – they are white with bright green stripes and emit an extremely pleasant, sweet vanilla or marzipan scent! Since this is still a very small seedling (baby) in a small pot, you will have a wonderful opportunity to watch its bulb grow stronger and fuller. It is a hardy, exotic, and very aesthetic houseplant that will add a gentle, unusual, and fragrant natural accent to any interior. It is an ideal, joy-enhancing, and unique gift for rarity collectors and anyone looking for an interesting addition to their sunny windowsill!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and direct sunlight! For Albuca to develop firm leaves, a healthy bulb, and most importantly, to bloom, it needs a large amount of sunlight. In too dark a place, the leaves will quickly stretch, bend, and the plant will not flower. A south, southeast, or southwest windowsill is absolutely ideal.

• 💧 Watering: Rare and very careful. Since this is a bulb plant (water and nutrients are stored in the bulb underground), it tolerates drying out much better than overwatering! Allow the soil to dry out completely between watering. It absolutely cannot tolerate roots and bulb sitting in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause rot and plant death. When watering, try not to pour water directly onto the bulb.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives at standard room temperature and literally loves normal, dry indoor air! This plant must not be misted to avoid fungal diseases. In winter, it is recommended to keep it in a slightly cooler room (but not below 10°C), protecting it from cold drafts.

• 🐾 Pets: Not pet-friendly. The plant (especially its bulb) is toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing it can cause digestive issues and vomiting. Keep it out of reach of pets!

🏠 BEST LOCATION:

• The brightest and sunniest south-facing windowsill in the home (an absolute prerequisite for this plant to bloom).

• A bright desk right by the window (due to its mini size, it fits perfectly and will delight with a vanilla aroma in spring).

Another extremely important natural secret about Albucas: since it is a bulb plant, it may enter a summer dormancy period. If you notice the plant’s leaves starting to yellow and dry after flowering – don’t worry, it’s not dead! The plant is simply resting. During this time, completely stop watering and place the pot in a shadier, dry spot. When you see new shoots emerging from the bulb in autumn or late winter, resume moderate watering and move it back into the sun. When repotting, be sure to use very loose, sandy soil (such as soil for cacti and succulents), leaving the top of the bulb slightly above the soil!
