Royal Variegated Sword Tooth Alocasia (Alocasia lauterbachiana 'Variegata')

Get ready to welcome one of the most dramatic, eccentric, and highly prized design rarities in the world of houseplants into your collection – Variegated Lauterbach Alocasia! This exclusive and extremely rare variety comes from the distant tropical islands of Papua New Guinea and belongs to the absolute elite of leaf and alocasia collections. The plant completely captivates with its prehistoric and distinctly sculptural silhouette: its narrow, long, spear-shaped leaves boast pronounced wavy, deeply serrated edges that perfectly resemble exotic sword teeth or dragon back scales. The greatest pride of this 'Variegata' variety is its breathtaking coloration – the dark green, glossy leaf surface is boldly decorated with an uneven coating of bright yellow, sunny cream, and lime green variegation. Each leaf unfolds as a unique surprise and an abstract nature painting, creating a stunning contrast with the leaf underside and slender stems, which proudly display a royal purple and burgundy tone. Currently, it is a small, compact, yet distinctly energetic and top-quality 10-15 cm young plant in a tiny 6 cm mini pot. It is an air-purifying and very architectural houseplant that will add an elite-class, modern, and maximally extravagant tropical luxury accent to any interior. It is the most prestigious and coveted gift for passionate rarity hunters and those seeking plants with a strong and bold visual character!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Bright but MANDATORILY diffused light. Here lies the main secret of this plant’s stunning beauty: since there is no chlorophyll in the yellow and sunny zones of the leaves, the plant vitally needs a large amount of light (it will love gentle morning or late evening sun) to maintain the expressive, contrasting variegation and prevent new leaves from unfolding simply green. However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays, which will instantly burn those precious leaf parts. An east or west-facing windowsill is a perfect choice.

  • 💧 Watering: Moderate and well-considered. Alocasias do not tolerate overly frequent watering and root soaking. Allow the top layer and the middle layer of the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings! Since the young plant is in a small 6 cm mini pot, it will dry out relatively quickly, but the plant absolutely cannot tolerate standing water in the saucer or decorative pot, which will quickly cause sensitive root and tuber rot. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A warmth-loving tropical queen (ideally +18°C to +25°C) that will be extremely happy with increased air humidity (above 55-60%). High humidity helps new, long leaves open easily and without cracks, and also protects the yellow leaf edges from premature drying. It will appreciate a spot near a humidifier or inside a closed plant cabinet. In winter, strictly protect it from cold drafts and icy windowsills!

  • 🐾 Pets: Keep away from pets. Like all alocasias, Lauterbachiana contains calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Place this precious and delicate plant out of reach of your four-legged friends.

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

  • Bright and warm windowsills, shelves, or desks with morning/evening sun (ideal environment for maintaining the unique golden tone and easy placement due to its compact young plant size).

  • Modern, minimalist living rooms, home offices, or plant display cabinets, where this elite-class sword tooth plant will serve as the main and most eye-catching interior design and conversation piece.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 10-15 cm (compact baby seedling / exceptionally valuable young plant)

  • Pot diameter: 6 cm (mini pot)

⚠️ Note and reality check about alocasias: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its unique distribution of sunny yellow variegation on the leaves may vary (some leaves may unfold more variegated and vivid, others greener – this is a natural and excitingly unpredictable characteristic of variegated plants). It is critically important to keep in mind that you are receiving a young plant (in a 6 cm pot)! Such small, exclusive seedlings must be handled much more gently, carefully, and patiently than mature plants at first. An important nature secret: alocasias grow naturally in cycles, and to grow a new, larger, and stronger leaf, they very often sacrifice and drop their older, smaller leaf – there is no need to worry about this; it is a completely normal process. Do not repot this plant immediately into a too-large pot – alocasias prefer a compact environment. When you repot it in the future, be sure to use an extremely airy, loose aroid soil mix (generously mixed with dry orchid bark, coconut chips, and perlite) so the roots can breathe freely and water drains instantly through the pot.
