Royal Aporocactus or Rat Tail Cactus (Aporocactus flagelliformis)

This is one of the most unusual, intriguing, and visually impressive members of the cactus family in the world – Royal Aporocactus (widely known worldwide as the Rat Tail Cactus)! This natural wonder comes from the mountainous regions of Mexico, where it grows wild as an epiphyte on rocks or tree branches. Unlike classic upright cacti, the aporocactus forms long, slender, and flexible stems densely covered with very fine, soft golden spines. These stems elegantly and abundantly cascade downward, creating an exotic, textured cascade. But the real burst of splendor is expected in spring when the plant blooms with incredibly large, bright pink or violet-pink butterfly-shaped flowers arranged along the entire length of the stems. This is a beautifully mature, strong 25 cm stem seedling in a 12 cm pot. It is exceptionally long-lasting, drought-loving, and a unique hanging plant that will add bold, wild, and distinctly modern desert and tropical elegance to any interior. It is a perfect and truly unforgettable gift for those seeking unusual and sculptural natural forms with spectacular flowering potential!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: A true sun lover! This is the main secret behind the strength of this plant’s stems and its abundant flowering: it vitally needs a large amount of light. It will be absolutely delighted with a spot in bright, direct sunlight on a south, west, or east-facing windowsill. Unlike many other houseplants, this cactus simply adores the sun’s rays and heat.

  • 💧 Watering: Very moderate and thoughtful. During the active growing period (spring and summer), water regularly but allow the top layer and middle layer of the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings. In autumn and winter, reduce watering to an absolute minimum (watering once a month is sufficient). The plant absolutely cannot tolerate root rot caused by standing water in the saucer or decorative pot, which will quickly cause stem base and root rot.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives in warmth and hot summer days and is also completely happy with the dry indoor air caused by winter heating. It does not require any misting. Important secret: for the cactus to boldly initiate flower buds in spring, it will greatly appreciate a cooler period in winter (about +10°C to +15°C) and almost complete dryness.

  • 🐾 Pets: Keep away from pets. Although aporocactus is not toxic, its stems are covered with countless fine spines. Curious cats or dogs trying to play with or chew the plant may get injured. Place it out of reach of pets.

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

  • Sunny, hot windowsills or shelves (especially on the south side), where other houseplants tend to get sunburned or dry out in the heat.

  • Hanging pots (macramé) or high shelf edges, allowing its long "rat tails" to flow freely and beautifully downward, creating a noticeable and modern design accent.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height (stem length): 25 cm (a beautifully mature, strong, and lush seedling with developed stems)

  • Pot diameter: 12 cm

⚠️ Note and reality check: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its stem density or exact arrangement may vary slightly (flower buds form only in a specific season, depending on proper winter dormancy). This plant grows relatively quickly, and over the years its stems can reach up to a meter in length. Do not repot it immediately into a large pot – aporocactus prefers a relatively compact environment for its root system. When you repot the plant in the future, ALWAYS use an excellent draining cactus/succulent soil mix (generously mixed with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand) so that water drains instantly through the pot and roots never sit in moisture.
