This extremely hardy and evergreen Japanese Aucuba 'Variegata', often called the "gold dust" shrub worldwide, is a true savior for shadier rooms and garden corners! It stands out with its glossy, leathery leaves richly speckled with bright yellow spots, bringing the illusion of sunlight even in the deepest shade. Unlike many houseplants, aucuba is famous for its ability to thrive and shine precisely in cool and shaded conditions. CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Partial shade to full shade! This is the main rule for this plant: unlike other variegated plants, aucuba absolutely does not need direct sunlight. On the contrary – strictly protect it from direct, scorching sun rays that will instantly burn its beautiful leaves, leaving ugly black spots and burns.

• 💧 Watering: Moderate. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Aucuba is quite tolerant, but absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause root rot. In winter months, when the plant is in cooler rooms, reduce watering significantly.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Loves coolness and fresh air! In our climate, aucuba is an absolutely excellent plant for growing in pots – in summer, you can safely take it outside to a shady corner of the terrace, while in winter it will literally adore cool, unheated (but protected from severe frost) rooms, such as a cooler hallway, glazed veranda, or conservatory (ideally around 5–15°C). Normal, very hot indoor air near radiators will be too warm for it.

• 🐾 Pets: Not pet-friendly. The plant is toxic to cats and dogs. Ingesting its leaves or berries (if they develop in the future) can cause vomiting and digestive issues. Keep it out of reach of pets!

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

• Cool hallway, stairwell, or glazed loggia (an absolutely ideal place for its safe overwintering and healthy growth).

• Shady summer terrace or balcony (where it will create a lush volume in the shade during summer months).

It is important to know nature’s secrets: you are currently receiving a young plant (15-20 cm)! Growing a large and magnificent shrub will take time. If the plant starts to weaken over time or you want to make it bushier, do not hesitate to prune its shoots boldly (best in early spring) to stimulate branching from the base. When repotting, use nutrient-rich, airy houseplant soil, and be sure not to forget a good layer of expanded clay drainage at the bottom of the pot.
