Royal Golden “Rat Tail” Cactus (Cleistocactus winteri)

Get ready to bring a dazzling sunlit glow, an airy cascade, and one of the most captivating desert silhouettes in the houseplant world into your home, office, or succulent collection—the stunning Golden Cleistocactus (Cleistocactus winteri / syn. Hildewintera aureispina, popularly and famously known as the “Golden Rat Tail”)! This exclusive natural masterpiece from the Bolivian mountains, highly prized among cactus collectors, is a true living work of art. The plant’s greatest pride, attraction, and unmistakable signature are its breathtaking shoots and flowers: from the base grow flexible, cylindrical stems densely and abundantly covered with fine, soft, golden-yellow, shimmering spines. As the plant grows, they form an impressive, trailing cascade. During the spring and summer months, mature plants generously delight with fabulous funnel-shaped flowers in vivid orange, salmon, and rosy shades, opening along the sides of the stems and creating a dazzling contrast with the golden spines (as shown in the sample image). It is currently a nicely grown, strong, notably dense, and highly promising 15 cm specimen in an ideally sized 9 cm pot. This is the most prestigious, tasteful, and reliable gift for home blessings, hanging pots, sunny shelves, cactus enthusiasts, and anyone seeking untamed natural architecture in their home!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: An exceptionally generous, bright, and sunny environment! Here lies the main secret to this plant’s golden spines and abundant flowering: Cleistocactus winteri is an absolute child of the sun. For its stems to grow thick and its spines to develop a bright golden-yellow color, place it in the brightest spot in the room (it will love and needs direct sunlight). In a location that is too dark, the stems will become thin and elongated, and the cactus will not flower. A south- or west-facing windowsill is the perfect choice!

  • 💧 Watering: Extremely infrequent, minimal, and very careful—this plant thrives best when you “forget” to water it. Since its thick stems act as powerful water reservoirs, the plant cannot tolerate constantly wet conditions. Water the plant only when the soil in the pot has dried out completely, 100%, all the way to the very bottom of the pot between waterings! Since the specimen is in a 9 cm pot, it will dry out moderately quickly, so the plant absolutely cannot tolerate its roots or the base of its stem soaking in standing water in the saucer, which can quickly cause rot. During the winter months (the dormant period), almost completely stop watering.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Feels excellent and comfortable in warm conditions and heat (+18°C to +28°C). This cactus tolerates dry indoor air, heating-season warmth, and requires no misting or additional humidity without any problems. The main secret to flowering: during the winter months, a cooler dormant period (+8°C to +12°C) and dry conditions are beneficial, stimulating the formation of spring flower buds. Protect it from icy drafts!

  • 🐾 Keep away from pets: Although the spines are relatively soft and bristle-like, the cactus stems are covered with fine spine-like hairs that may physically irritate curious pets. Place this cascading plant in a safe, elevated location away from children and four-legged friends.

🏠 IDEAL LOCATION:

  • Sunny south- or west-facing windowsills, high shelves, hanging pots, and places close to windows, where these golden, trailing stems will receive the most solar energy and stand out as the main design feature.

  • Modern, loft, Scandinavian, or minimalist interiors, where clean lines and shimmering natural textures create the perfect visual balance.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height (stem length): 15 cm

  • Pot diameter: 9 cm

⚠️ Note and a dose of reality about cleistocacti: Plants are living organisms, so every specimen and its exact density of golden spines, number of stems, and curvature is a completely unique work of nature—no two plants in the world are identical. Flowering note: The first sample image shows an example of a mature plant in magnificent bloom—the specimen produces abundant flowers in the spring/summer season once it has reached maturity and received plenty of sunlight. Since this is a strong specimen in a portable 9 cm pot, it is exceptionally hardy and will not require repotting for some time yet (cacti like compact pots). When you eventually repot it, be sure to use a special, mineralized, sandy, and highly porous cactus/succulent soil mix (generously containing gravel, pumice, and perlite) to ensure that excess water drains through the pot immediately.

📦 Pick it up promptly! When the package has been delivered, collect it the same day. Do not leave the package in the parcel locker overnight! Cold and heat can damage the plants and predatory mites.
