Cussonia or African Cabbage Tree (Cussonia)

This extremely unusual, architectural, and exotic Cussonia, also called the "Cabbage tree" in its native South Africa, is a true find for lovers of unique shapes! It stands out with its bottle-shaped or delicate bonsai-like, sturdy trunk (caudex), topped with a spectacular, umbrella-like crown of bluish-green or gray-green, deeply lobed, and very expressive leaves. CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and direct sunlight! For the Cussonia to develop its massive trunk and for its leaves to grow densely and beautifully, it needs a large amount of light. A south or southwest-facing windowsill is an absolutely ideal choice. In too dark a place, the plant will become weak and grow leggy and unattractive.

• 💧 Watering: Rare and very careful. As a plant born in dry regions that stores water in its thick trunk and roots, it requires a succulent-like watering regime. Allow the soil to dry out completely and deeply between watering! It absolutely cannot tolerate root rot caused by standing water in the saucer, which quickly leads to root and trunk rot. In winter, reduce watering to an absolute minimum.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives in warmth and literally loves normal, dry indoor air. This plant does not need misting! In the warm summer months, it is definitely recommended to take the Cussonia outside to fresh air on a sunny terrace or balcony. In winter, it will appreciate slightly cooler rooms but be sure to protect it from frost and icy drafts.

• 🐾 Pets: Friendly. The plant is not considered toxic and is safe to have in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

• The sunniest and brightest living room windowsill (visually a clean and sculptural design element, as you can see).

• A bright and sunny terrace or balcony in summer (where it will enjoy fresh air and remind you of its natural African environment).

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen, leaf crown, and trunk (caudex) thickness may vary. It is important to know nature’s secrets: Cussonias tend to naturally shed older, lower leaves, slowly growing a bare trunk lengthwise – this is a completely normal trunk formation process! Also, during the winter dormancy period (if the room is cooler and darker), it may shed most of its leaves and "go to sleep," but they will regrow in spring. When repotting, it is strictly forbidden to use regular, dense, and moisture-retaining indoor plant soil! Always use an extremely airy and loose cactus and succulent soil mix, generously mixed with pumice, perlite, and coarse sand. Cussonias have deep roots, so when repotting, choose a pot that is rather deep than wide.
