Ackerman's Epiphyllum or Orchid Cactus (Epiphyllum ackermanii)
This extremely spectacular, dramatic, and legendary Ackerman's Epiphyllum (often called the Orchid Cactus) is a true star of the houseplant world and one of the most impressive flowering plants you can grow at home! Unlike classic desert cacti, this natural wonder comes from the tropical rainforests of Mexico, where it grows high in tree branches as an epiphyte. It has no sharp spines – instead, the plant forms long, flat, smooth, and lobed leaf-like stems in a pleasant, lush green tone that elegantly curve and flow downward. But the real sensation begins during flowering: the epiphyllum blooms with incredibly large, exotic, fiery red star-shaped flowers, with delicate cream-colored stamens shining in the center. These flowers are so grand and refined that they instantly take your breath away! It is currently a beautifully matured, strong 30 cm plant in a larger 14 cm pot. It is an exceptionally long-lived and easy-to-care-for hanging plant that will add airy elegance and an exotic burst of color to any interior. It is the perfect, luxurious gift for those who love flowering plants but are looking for something much more unusual than classic houseplants!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but MUST be diffused light. Here lies the main secret to this plant’s abundant flowering: to produce flower buds, the epiphyllum needs a large amount of light (it will especially enjoy the gentle morning or late evening sun rays). However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun, which will burn its long, flat stems sharply and turn them an unsightly yellow. An east or west-facing windowsill is a perfect choice.
-
💧 Watering: Moderate and very thoughtful. Since it is a rainforest cactus, it likes a bit more moisture than its desert relatives, but it still does not tolerate overwatering. Water generously but allow the topsoil and the middle layer between waterings to dry out thoroughly! During the winter months (the plant’s rest period), reduce watering to a minimum. The plant absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause root rot.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives at standard room temperature (+18°C to +25°C). Unlike other tropical plants, it adapts relatively well to normal indoor light and does not require constant humidification. Important secret: to encourage flower buds at the end of winter, it will appreciate a cooler period in autumn and winter (about +12°C to +15°C) and minimal watering. Once buds appear, do not rotate or move the plant, or it may drop them!
-
🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly. Ackerman's epiphyllum is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs. Since it has no spines, it will not harm anyone.
🏠 BEST ROOM:
-
Bright living rooms, bedrooms, or kitchens where bright, filtered light is provided and there is space for its spectacular growth.
-
A high shelf, cabinet edge, or hanging pot, allowing its long, flat stems to flow freely and elegantly downward, creating a sculptural cascade of greenery and later – a sea of flowers.
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 30 cm (already beautifully matured, strong, and lush plant with developed stems)
-
Pot diameter: 14 cm
⚠️ Note and reality check: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its stem arrangement may vary slightly (flower buds form only in a specific season, depending on proper winter dormancy). This plant grows relatively fast and becomes more impressive and lush over the years. Do not repot it immediately into a too large pot – the epiphyllum prefers a relatively compact root environment, which promotes better flowering. When you repot the plant in the future, be sure to use an extremely airy, loose, and porous soil mix (for example, cactus soil generously mixed with orchid bark and perlite) so its roots can breathe freely and excess water drains instantly through the pot.
