Fockea or Kaudex Plant (Fockea edulis)
This extremely unusual, exotic, and distinctive succulent is a true botanical wonder and a dream for every plant collector! Fockea (also known as the Kaudex plant) is mainly admired for its massive, woody, bulb-like trunk or caudex, which serves as a huge reservoir for water and nutrients. From this rough bulb, delicate green vines with small leaves stretch out in spring and summer, which can either elegantly hang down or climb a small support. An interesting fact – the word edulis means "edible," because in its native land (South Africa), locals historically used this bulb as a bread substitute, but only after very long and specific cooking (raw it is poisonous!). It is a slow-growing, extremely patient, and sculptural houseplant that will add an unusual, desert-like, and very original natural accent to any interior. It is an exclusive, joy-enhancing, and unique gift for succulent, bonsai, and rarity lovers!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright light with some direct sunlight. The green vines need a lot of light to avoid becoming leggy. However, strictly protect the caudex (bulb) itself from very intense midday sun rays, which can burn its bark! An east, west, or slightly shaded south-facing windowsill is ideal.
-
💧 Watering: Infrequent and very careful. Thanks to its massive bulb, Fockea tolerates drought much better than overwatering! Allow the soil to dry out completely between watering. It absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause bulb rot and plant death. Reduce watering to an absolute minimum during winter months.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives at standard room temperature and literally loves normal, dry indoor air! This plant must never be misted. In summer, it can be safely placed outside in fresh air on a sunny terrace, but in winter protect it strictly from cold (temperature must not drop below 10-12°C).
-
🐾 Pets: Not pet-friendly. The plant (especially its sap) is toxic to cats and dogs. In its raw form, it contains substances that can cause digestive issues and mouth irritation if chewed. Keep it out of reach of pets!

⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its unique bulb shape may slightly differ from the description (each is a unique, nature-created sculptural artwork!). Important to know nature’s secrets: in its natural environment, the Fockea bulb is mostly underground, but as a houseplant it is planted so that it is partially above the soil to highlight its beauty. Fockea may enter a winter dormancy period – if in autumn or winter its leaves start yellowing and falling or the vines dry out, don’t worry, the plant is not dead! It is simply resting. During this time, stop watering. In spring, new green shoots will grow from the bulb again. You can safely prune or train the vines around a decorative support to control the plant’s shape. When repotting, be sure to use very loose, sandy soil (cactus and succulent soil with good drainage).
