Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair tree)
This extremely special and legendary Ginkgo biloba is not only beautiful but also a true "living fossil" – one of the oldest tree species in the world, having grown on our planet since the time of the dinosaurs! It stands out with its unique, delicate fan-shaped leaves, which are bright green in spring and summer, turning stunning golden yellow in autumn. Since this is still a very small seedling (baby) in a miniature (6 cm) pot, it is absolutely perfect as a starter plant for those who want to grow their own tree or shape it in bonsai style. It is an elegant, hardy, and slow-growing plant that will add a subtle, oriental, and historic natural accent to your balcony, terrace, or home. It is a very symbolic, long-living, and joy-bringing gift for nature enthusiasts and bonsai art lovers!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright light with some direct sunlight. For the ginkgo to grow strong and develop healthy foliage, it needs a lot of light. A south, east, or west-facing location is an excellent choice.
-
💧 Watering: Regular and attentive. Ginkgo likes evenly slightly moist soil. Since the plant is in a very small (6 cm) pot, the soil will dry out very quickly on sunny summer days – be careful to prevent the root system from drying out! However, remember – it absolutely cannot tolerate root rot caused by standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause decay.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives outdoors! During the warm spring and summer months, it is highly recommended to take this plant outside into fresh air on a sunny terrace or balcony. Unlike tropical houseplants, ginkgo is a deciduous tree, meaning it needs a cool dormant period in winter (ideal winter temperature is from 0°C to +10°C).
-
🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly. Ginkgo leaves are not toxic to pets, but since this is a very delicate and fragile young plant, it is recommended to keep it in a safe place out of reach of pets.
🏠 BEST LOCATION:
-
Bright, sunny balcony or terrace (an absolutely ideal place during the active growing season).
-
Bright and cool glazed loggia or conservatory (a perfect place for safe overwintering in autumn and winter).
-
Bright windowsill (while the plant is still small, it can be kept indoors in spring and summer).
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 10-15 cm (seedling / baby)
-
Pot diameter: 6 cm
⚠️ Note: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its crown shape may vary slightly. It is important to know nature’s secrets: since ginkgo is a deciduous plant, its leaves will turn bright yellow and fall off in autumn – don’t be alarmed, the plant is not dead! This is a natural winter dormancy period. During this time, watering should be reduced to an absolute minimum (just enough to prevent the roots from drying out completely) and the plant should be kept cool. In spring, new green fan-shaped leaves will sprout from the buds again! If you plan to grow it as a bonsai tree, you can confidently prune its shoots to shape the desired trunk and crown form. When repotting, be sure to use airy soil with excellent drainage (for bonsai, use specialized bonsai substrate).
