Finlayson Hoya or Wax Flower 'Sukirin' (Hoya finlaysonii 'Sukirin')
Get ready to meet one of the most sculptural, characterful, and highly valued wax flowers among houseplant collectors – Hoya 'Sukirin' (an exclusive and expressive Hoya finlaysonii variety)! This unique tropical epiphyte comes from the depths of Southeast Asian jungles and stands out with a completely unique, almost prehistoric leaf design. Its leaves are extremely tough, thick, and firm (feeling like durable cardboard or leather), with distinctly wavy, toothed, and darkly colored edges. But the greatest pride of this Hoya is its dramatic, strongly textured netted venation. On a lighter, lime green background stretch expressive, dark green-black veins, creating a perfect natural mosaic or exotic reptile skin effect. With proper and loving care, it will reward you in the future with stunning, compact star-shaped flower clusters that emit a pleasant, spice-rich aroma. Currently, it is a small, stable, and well-rooted 10-15 cm young plant in a 10.5 cm pot. It is an air-purifying and incredibly long-lasting vine/hanging plant that will add a sophisticated, modern, and very tasteful tropical luxury accent to any interior. It is a perfect, prestigious gift for those looking for plants with a distinct geometric structure!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but MANDATORILY diffused light. Here lies the main secret of this plant’s stunning pattern: for the Hoya to maintain such an intense, dark netted venation and for new leaves to develop strong, it needs a large amount of light (it will especially enjoy gentle morning or late evening sun rays). However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays that will instantly burn its unique leaves. An east or west-facing windowsill is a perfect choice.
-
💧 Watering: Rare, moderate, and very careful! Since its leaves are distinctly thick and tough, the plant stores water reserves in them perfectly. Water only when the soil in the pot is almost completely dry (at least to the lower two-thirds of the pot)! The plant absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause sensitive root rot. If in doubt – better wait a few more days.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A warmth-loving tropical resident (ideally +18°C to +25°C), which, thanks to its thick leaves, adapts relatively well to normal, dry indoor air and does not require constant misting. Of course, it will appreciate increased humidity (above 50%), which helps new shoots and leaves develop faster. In winter, strictly protect it from cold drafts!
-
🐾 Pets: Friendly. This exotic and spectacular wax flower is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 BEST LOCATION:
-
A bright and warm windowsill or shelf in morning/evening sun (ideal environment to maintain the unique venation and easy placement due to its compact young plant size).
-
Modern living rooms, home offices, or plant cabinets, where this plant’s tough, textured leaves and vining nature will serve as a noticeable and sophisticated interior design element.
SPECIFICATIONS:

⚠️ Note and reality check about wax flowers: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and the exact intensity of its netted pattern or leaf teeth may vary slightly. It is important to remember that you are receiving a young plant! Small seedlings should be handled more gently and patiently than mature plants at first. An important nature secret: Hoyas naturally grow as vines and sometimes produce long, "bare" shoots (strings) initially without leaves. Never cut these off! This is a completely normal natural process – when the long shoot finds support or enough light, new, grand leaves will gradually and densely grow on it. If the plant blooms in the future, after flowering never cut off old flower stalks, because the Hoya will bloom next season from those same stems! When repotting this plant in the future, ALWAYS use an extremely airy, porous, and loose epiphyte/orchid soil mix (generously mixed with perlite, coconut chips, and coarse orchid bark) so the roots receive maximum oxygen.
