Hylocereus or Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus / Selenicereus)

This extremely unusual, fast-growing, and botanically fascinating Hylocereus, more widely known worldwide as Dragon Fruit or Pitaya, is a true embodiment of tropical exoticism! Unlike classic, round desert cacti, this is an epiphytic tropical jungle cactus that naturally grows as a huge vine climbing tree trunks. It stands out with long, three-angled shoots and breathtaking, huge white flowers that bloom only at night (hence it is often called the "Queen of the Night"). It is a dynamic and very patient houseplant that will add a bold, wild, and extremely original natural accent to any interior. It is a great and joy-inducing gift for exotic lovers and anyone dreaming of growing their own tropical fruit garden on the windowsill!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and direct sunlight! For the cactus to grow strong, have firm stems, and be able to bloom in the future, it vitally needs a very large amount of sunlight. A south or southwest-facing windowsill is an absolutely ideal choice. In too dark a place, the shoots will stretch and become unattractively thin.

• 💧 Watering: Moderate. Important to know: since this is a tropical (not desert) cactus, it needs a bit more water than regular cacti, especially during the active summer growth period. Allow the top layer of soil to dry completely between waterings, but do not let it dry out for months. It absolutely cannot tolerate root rot caused by standing water in the saucer, which will quickly cause root decay! Watering is significantly reduced in winter.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Thrives in warmth. In summer, it is definitely recommended to take this cactus outside into fresh air on a sunny terrace, balcony, or greenhouse. It tolerates normal indoor air well but will also appreciate slightly increased humidity. Protect from frost and cold drafts in winter!

• 🐾 Pets: Friendly. This exotic cactus is non-toxic and safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

• Bright and very sunny balcony, terrace, or greenhouse in summer (the absolutely best place for this plant during the active season).

• Brightest south-facing windowsill in the living room (as a bold, climbing green accent).

⚠️ Note and reality check about the fruits: Plants are living organisms, and it is important to keep in mind – the Dragon Fruit (pitaya) shown in the first image is only an example of what this plant can produce in the future! You will receive a seedling (15 cm tall). To expect flowers and fruits indoors, you will need patience – the plant must grow significantly and reach a large mass (often over several years), and to form fruit, the flower must be hand-pollinated (with a brush) on the night it blooms.

Another nature secret: hylocereus is a vine and naturally forms long aerial roots. To grow healthy and prevent the stems from breaking under their own weight, you will soon need to provide a very stable, vertical support (a hoop, trellis, or wooden stake) to tie it to. When repotting, be sure to use airy and loose soil (cactus and succulent soil mixed with a small amount of orchid bark and perlite).
