Thyrsiflora kalanchoe or “Desert Cabbage” (Kalanchoe thyrsiflora)

This exceptionally unusual and attractive succulent, affectionately known because of its appearance as the “Desert Cabbage” or “Pancake Plant,” is a true lover of sunlight and drought. It stands out with large, fleshy, rounded leaves arranged in a dense, sculptural rosette. This plant reaches its fullest beauty in bright sunlight, when the edges of its leaves turn fiery red and burgundy. It is an extremely hardy, easy-care, architectural houseplant that will add a modern, exotic, and highly noticeable accent to any interior. CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and direct sunlight. To maintain its dense form and develop the famous bright red coloring along the edges of its leaves, it vitally needs plenty of sunlight. A south- or southwest-facing windowsill is an absolutely ideal choice. In a darker location, the leaves will become completely green, and the plant will quickly become leggy.

• 💧 Watering: Very infrequent and cautious. Like other desert inhabitants, allow the soil to dry out completely—right down to the bottom of the pot—between waterings. Overwatering and soaking in standing water are this plant’s greatest enemies and will quickly cause root rot. During the winter dormancy period, reduce watering to a minimum.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: It thrives at standard room temperature and literally loves dry air. It must absolutely not be misted! In summer, it will be extremely happy if you move it outdoors into the sunlight on a terrace or balcony (in the fresh air, it will become even rosier and denser).

• 🐾 Pets: Not pet-friendly. This succulent is toxic to cats and dogs. If the leaves are eaten or chewed, they may cause gastrointestinal irritation and other problems, so keep it out of your pets’ reach.

🏠 BEST LOCATION:

• A sunny south-facing windowsill in the living room (where the plant will receive maximum sunlight for its red coloring).

• A bright and modern office (as a sculptural, minimalist design element that requires minimal attention).

• A sunny balcony or terrace in summer (during the warmer months, it will thrive outdoors and build up its energy reserves).
