Royal Saw-toothed Jungle Cactus (Lepismium houlletianum)

Get ready to bring the breathtaking magnificence of a tropical jungle, an airy cascade, and the most distinctive shoot architecture in the houseplant world into your home or office—the stunning Saw-toothed Jungle Cactus (Lepismium houlletianum, also poetically known as the “Snowdrop Cactus”)! This exclusive Brazilian epiphyte, highly prized among air-garden enthusiasts, is a true masterpiece of living nature that differs radically from ordinary desert plants. The plant’s greatest pride, magnet, and unmistakable signature is the shape of its shoots: from the base, long, trailing, distinctly flat shoots form a substantial clump, their edges decorated with a rhythmic, deeply saw-toothed or wavy pattern in rich emerald green. In brighter light, the shoot edges develop a beautiful reddish hue. During maturity and flowering, this cactus transforms into a true fairytale—countless delicate, creamy-white and yellowish bell-shaped flowers bloom in every saw-tooth indentation along the shoot edges, visually resembling snowdrops. It is currently a grandly grown, strong, exceptionally dense and substantial 35 cm cascade specimen in a large, generously sized 21 cm pot. This is the most prestigious, tasteful, and flawless gift for a housewarming, luxury hanging pots, and anyone seeking visually striking natural dynamism in their home!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Bright, abundant, but ABSOLUTELY indirect light (with gentle morning or evening sun). This is the secret behind this epiphyte’s abundant flowering and reddish tones: plenty of filtered light will give the shoots a rich color and encourage flower-bud formation. Strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sunlight, which can quickly burn and yellow its flat leaves/shoots. It will do best near an east- or west-facing window.

  • 💧 Watering: Regular, moderate, and very careful. As a jungle cactus, it prefers consistent, light moisture (much more than its desert cousins), but it will not tolerate roots soaking in standing water. Water the plant generously, but only when the top layer of soil (the upper 2–4 cm of the pot) has completely dried out between waterings. Since the specimen is in a substantial 21 cm pot, it will dry more slowly, so the plant categorically does not tolerate roots soaking in standing water in the saucer. Reduce watering slightly in winter.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: It thrives in moderate room temperatures (+18°C to +25°C). This epiphyte appreciates moderate to high humidity, so it will enjoy a room that is not excessively dry. In winter, protect it from the dry heat of radiators, icy drafts, and temperatures below +12°C!

  • 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly / Non-toxic. Lepismiums are non-toxic and completely safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 BEST ROOM:

  • Bright shelves, indoor balconies, conservatories, and large hanging pots, where these flat, saw-toothed cascading shoots can hang freely at their full length.

  • Modern, “urban jungle,” or Scandinavian-style interiors, where exotic architectural forms serve as a unique focal point.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height (shoot length): 35 cm (a grandly grown, strong, exceptionally dense, and visually stunning cascade specimen)

  • Pot diameter: 21 cm (a very large and generous volume that ensures excellent plant stability and room for a thick clump of shoots)

⚠️ Note and a dose of reality about jungle cacti: Plants are living organisms, so every specimen and its exact shoot length, depth of the saw-toothed pattern, and tonal nuances are completely unique masterpieces of nature. Since this is a large, exceptionally mature specimen in a generous 21 cm pot, it is extremely sturdy and will not require repotting for a very long time (jungle cacti like to fill the pot with roots before they begin flowering abundantly). When you eventually repot it, ABSOLUTELY use a light, peaty, porous, and exceptionally well-draining epiphyte/orchid potting mix (with a generous amount of pine bark and perlite) to ensure free air circulation around the roots.
