Royal Fern Moss Mat or Cotula (Leptinella squalida)

Get ready to bring absolute botanical delicacy, the lace-like architecture of nature, and the most detailed groundcover plant in the world of houseplants into your home, onto a cooler windowsill, or into a conservatory - the stunning Cotula (Leptinella squalida, commonly known as brass buttons or New Zealand moss)! This exclusive masterpiece of nature is a real find for admirers of delicate textures, miniature gardens, and the aesthetics of terrariums. The plant's greatest pride, its magnet, and its unmistakable trademark is its breathtaking foliage: it forms an extremely dense, ground-hugging mat of tiny, precise, fern-like leaves. Depending on the light and variety, they can boast rich green, bronze, purple, or slightly silvery hues, creating a visually incredibly rich and pleasant-to-the-touch texture. In summer, this mat may bloom with miniature yellow "buttons." It is currently a large, notably dense, wide-spreading plant, 10-15 cm tall (spilling over the edges in diameter), in a generous 12 cm pot. It is the most prestigious, tasteful, and unusual gift for a house blessing, owners of cool windowsills, terrarium designers, and anyone looking for an utterly unique, lace-like living decoration!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Bright but MANDATORILY indirect light or moderate partial shade. Here lies the main secret to this plant's dense mat: in nature, leptinella often grows in partial shade, so be sure to protect it from direct, scorching midday sun. Too much sun will quickly scorch these microscopic "fern" leaves and dry them out like hay. An east-, west-, or bright north-facing windowsill will be perfect.

  • 💧 Watering: Regular, generous, and extremely careful to avoid letting it dry out. This plant is a pronounced moisture-lover! Water generously, keeping the soil constantly and evenly moist (like a wrung-out sponge). Since the foliage is extremely dense, THE GOLDEN RULE is to water this plant ONLY FROM BELOW, by pouring water into the saucer and letting the soil soak it up, then pouring off any excess after 20 minutes. If you pour water directly onto the leaves from above, they will quickly start to turn brown and rot in the center when exposed to standing moisture. Never let the root ball dry out completely!

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A lover of coolness and fresh air! This plant absolutely cannot tolerate hot, stuffy indoor air or heat. It will feel best in cooler, well-ventilated rooms (+15°C to +20°C) and will appreciate higher humidity. In winter, be sure to protect it from the dry, hot air from heating radiators!

  • 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly / Non-toxic. Leptinella is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe to have in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 BEST ROOM:

  • Cool verandas, bright bathrooms, glass terrariums, and sunny, cool windowsills, where this fern-like cushion will get the humidity and fresh air it needs.

  • Natural rock gardens, Zen gardens, or "botanical"-style interiors/exteriors, where miniature, intricate natural textures serve as a refined design element.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 10-15 cm (a wide, vigorous, notably dense silvery-green "moss" mat spilling over the edges of the pot)

  • Pot diameter: 12 cm

⚠️ Note and a reality check about groundcover houseplants: Plants are living organisms! An important reality check: just like the aforementioned soleirolia or scleranthus, leptinella is not a classic, forgiving houseplant that will tolerate neglect. It absolutely cannot tolerate dryness - if it dries out, its leaves will turn brown and crispy in literally a day. It also needs excellent air circulation to protect its dense center from mold or rot. If brown, rotten patches appear in the middle of the mat, it means the plant has been watered from above and lacks fresh air. In winter, it can often also be grown outdoors in rock gardens, as it is notably cold-hardy, while indoors it will make an excellent addition to glass terrariums. When repotting, use a light, peat-based but well-draining houseplant potting mix.

📦 Pick it up promptly! When the package has been delivered, collect it the same day. Do not leave the package in the parcel locker overnight! Cold and heat can damage the plants and predatory mites.
