Exotic Octopus Orchid (Prosthechea cochleata 'Octopussy')
Get ready to welcome the most intriguing, surreal, and highly prized tropical treasure among houseplant connoisseurs into your collection – the stunning Octopus Orchid (formerly known as Encyclia cochleata)! This exotic masterpiece of nature grows in the wild on tree trunks in the rainforests of Central America and the Caribbean, and is renowned for its completely unique floral architecture, unlike that of any classic orchid. The plant’s greatest pride, magnet, and signature feature is its mysterious flowers: they grow seemingly “upside down,” with a dark purple, almost black lip forming the shape of a seashell or octopus head, while the long, slender, yellow-green petals flow downward like graceful tentacles. This surreal combination visually creates the illusion of a living, moving sea creature, and during the flowering season it blooms boldly and for a long time – new flowers gradually open one after another over many months. In addition to its avant-garde appearance, the plant boasts attractive, lush green, thick pseudobulbs that act as water reservoirs. It is currently a small, compact, yet exceptionally healthy, strong, and valuable 10 cm young plant in a special 9 cm orchid pot. This is the most coveted, prestigious, and guaranteed unforgettable gift for passionate orchid collectors, exotic-plant enthusiasts, and anyone seeking untamed and rare natural art for their home!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Moderately bright, pleasant, but ABSOLUTELY diffused light. Here lies the main secret to this orchid’s abundant flowering: Prosthechea adores a well-lit environment (it will especially enjoy gentle morning or late-evening sunlight), which gives it the energy to produce new pseudobulbs and magnificent flower spikes. However, it categorically and strictly dislikes direct midday sun, which will scorch its sensitive leaves and flower buds in an instant. An east- or west-facing windowsill with filtered light will suit it best.
-
💧 Watering: Moderate, regular, and carefully considered. Since this orchid is an epiphyte and its thick bases (pseudobulbs) store moisture very well, it cannot tolerate living in a constant swamp. Water the plant thoroughly (ideally by soaking the pot for 10–15 minutes), but only when the substrate in the pot has almost completely dried out! Since the plant is in a compact 9 cm pot, it will dry out relatively quickly during warm weather. The plant categorically dislikes having its roots soak in stagnant water in a saucer or decorative pot, which will eventually cause the sensitive roots to rot. Use only soft, lukewarm water or rainwater for watering.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A heat-loving tropical resident (ideally +18°C to +25°C). This orchid is relatively hardy and adapts very well to ordinary indoor air, but it will be extremely grateful for increased humidity (above 50%). This can be achieved by placing the pot on a tray of damp pebbles or clay granules, ensuring that the bottom of the pot does not touch the water. During the winter heating season, protect it from dry radiator air and icy drafts when airing the room!
-
🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly. This exotic Octopus Orchid is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 IDEAL LOCATION:
-
Bright, warm living-room or home-office windowsills (with light filtered through a curtain), where this miniature botanical treasure and its surreal flowers will be the center of attention and bring joy every day.
-
Special plant cabinets, glass terrariums, or orchid shelves, where a pleasant microclimate is maintained and where this rare specimen can serve as the greatest pride of the collection.

⚠️ Note and a dose of reality about exotic orchids: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its exact leaf development, number of pseudobulbs, or stage of flowering readiness may vary slightly at any given time, creating a one-of-a-kind natural form. An important secret: this orchid prefers a notably narrow, compact environment, so do not repot it into a pot that is too large. Repotting will only be necessary once the substrate (bark) has completely broken down (in about two years). When you repot it in spring, you MUST use a special, highly airy, coarse orchid potting mix (pine bark mixed with perlite and a small amount of moss) to ensure that water drains through the pot immediately and the roots can breathe freely.
