Exotic Octopus Orchid (Prosthechea cochleata 'Octopussy')

Get ready to welcome the most intriguing, surreal, and highly prized tropical treasure among houseplant connoisseurs into your collection – the stunning Octopus Orchid (formerly known as Encyclia cochleata)! This exotic masterpiece of nature grows wild in the tree trunks of Central American rainforests and the Caribbean region, and is famously known for its completely unique flower architecture unlike any classic orchid. The plant’s greatest pride, magnet, and calling card are its mystical flowers: they grow seemingly "upside down," where the dark purplish-red, almost black lip forms the shape of a snail shell or octopus head, while the long, slender yellow-green petals flow downward like graceful tentacles. This surreal combination visually creates the illusion of a living, moving sea creature and blooms boldly and for a long time during the flowering season – new flowers gradually open one after another for months. In addition to its avant-garde appearance, the plant boasts neat, lush green, and thick pseudobulbs that act as water reservoirs. Currently, it is a small, compact, yet extremely healthy, strong, and valuable 10 cm young plant in a special 9 cm orchid pot. It is the most coveted, prestigious, and guaranteed unforgettable gift for passionate orchid collectors, exotic hunters, and anyone seeking untamed and rare natural art for their home!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Medium bright, pleasant, but MANDATORILY diffused light. Here lies the main secret to this orchid’s abundant flowering: Prosthechea loves a well-lit environment (it will especially enjoy gentle morning or late evening sun rays), which gives it the energy to produce new pseudobulbs and magnificent flower stalks. However, it categorically and strictly cannot tolerate direct midday sun, which will instantly burn its sensitive leaves and flower buds. It prefers an east or west-facing windowsill with filtered light.

  • 💧 Watering: Moderate, regular, and very thoughtful. Since this orchid is an epiphyte and its thick bases (pseudobulbs) store moisture well, it does not tolerate living in a constant swamp. Water the plant generously (preferably by soaking the pot for 10-15 minutes), but only when the substrate in the pot is almost completely dry! Because the plant is in a compact 9 cm pot, it will dry out relatively quickly in warm weather. The plant categorically cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in a saucer or decorative pot, which will cause sensitive root rot. Use only soft, lukewarm, or rainwater for watering.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A warmth-loving tropical resident (ideally +18°C to +25°C). This orchid is relatively hardy and adapts well to normal indoor light, but it will be extremely grateful for increased air humidity (above 50%). This can be achieved by placing the pot on a tray with moist pebbles or clay granules (so that the bottom of the pot does not touch the water). During the winter heating season, protect it from dry radiator air and icy drafts when ventilating windows!

  • 🐾 Pets: Friendly. This exotic octopus orchid is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

  • Bright and warm living room or home office windowsills (with curtain-filtered light), where this miniature species treasure and its surreal flowers will be the center of attention and delight daily.

  • Special plant display cases, glass terrariums, or orchid shelves, where a pleasant microclimate is maintained and this rare specimen will serve as the greatest pride of the collection.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 10 cm (compact, well-cared-for, strong, and extremely valuable young plant for the collection)

  • Pot diameter: 9 cm (compact, special orchid volume perfectly suited to the plant’s current development stage)

⚠️ Note and reality check about exotic orchids: Plants are living organisms, so each specimen and its exact leaf arrangement, number of pseudobulbs, or flowering readiness at any given moment may vary slightly, creating a unique natural form. Important secret: this orchid prefers a distinctly narrow, compact environment, so do not repot it into a pot that is too large. Repotting will only be necessary when the substrate (bark) has completely decomposed (after about two years). When you repot it in spring, be sure to use a special, very airy and coarse orchid soil mix (pine bark mixed with perlite and a little moss) to ensure water drains instantly through the pot and the roots can breathe freely.
