Royal emerald moss carpet or Pearlwort (Sagina subulata)

Get ready to bring absolute botanical minimalism, a fairytale-inspired natural aesthetic, and one of the densest ground-cover plants in the world of houseplants into your home, onto a cooler windowsill, or into a conservatory: the stunning Pearlwort (Sagina subulata / commonly known as Irish moss)! Although often called moss, this exclusive natural masterpiece is actually a delicate flowering plant that forms an extremely dense, compact, springy carpet (cushion). The plant’s greatest pride and unmistakable hallmark is its ability to create a perfectly smooth, lush emerald-green surface (sometimes with a silvery sheen, depending on the play of light), which becomes covered in spring and summer with countless microscopic snow-white, star-shaped flowers, creating the illusion of a starry meadow. It is currently a large, exceptionally dense, wide-spreading plant, 10-15 cm tall, in a generous 12 cm pot. This is the most prestigious, stylish, and unusual gift for bringing a blessing into your home, for zen garden enthusiasts, terrarium makers, and anyone looking for a truly unique, living natural decoration!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Bright but MUST be indirect light, or moderate partial shade. Here lies the main secret to this plant’s dense carpet: Pearlwort needs plenty of light to maintain its exceptional density, but indoors it must be strictly protected from direct, scorching midday sun. Excessively strong sun and heat will quickly scorch and dry out this “moss” carpet like hay. An east- or west-facing windowsill, or a very bright north-facing one, is perfect.

  • 💧 Watering: Regular, generous, and extremely careful to prevent drying out. This plant absolutely loves moisture! Water generously, keeping the soil constantly and evenly moist (like a wrung-out sponge). Because the foliage is extremely dense, the GOLDEN RULE is to water this plant ONLY FROM BELOW, by pouring water into the saucer and letting the soil absorb it, then draining off any excess after 20-30 minutes. If you pour water directly over the leaves from above, they will quickly start to turn brown and rot from the center when exposed to standing moisture. Never let the root ball dry out completely!

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A lover of coolness and fresh air! This plant absolutely cannot tolerate hot, stuffy indoor air or sweltering heat. It will feel best in cooler, well-ventilated rooms (+15°C to +20°C) and will greatly appreciate higher humidity. In winter, be sure to protect it from the hot, dry air from heating radiators!

  • 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly / Non-toxic. Pearlwort is completely non-toxic and absolutely safe to keep in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 BEST ROOM:

  • Cool verandas, bright bathrooms, glass terrariums, and sunny, cool windowsills, where this “moss” cushion will get the moisture and fresh air it needs.

  • Natural rock gardens, zen gardens, and minimalist or “botanical”-style interiors/exteriors, where miniature, delicate natural textures serve as a refined design element.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 10-15 cm (a wide, robust, exceptionally dense silver “moss” carpet that spills over the edges of the pot)

  • Pot diameter: 12 cm

⚠️ Note and a reality check about ground-cover houseplants: Plants are living organisms! An important reality check: Pearlwort is not a classic, forgiving houseplant that will tolerate neglect. It absolutely cannot tolerate drought - if it dries out, its lush leaves will become crispy within literally a day and often will not recover. It also needs excellent air circulation. If brown, rotten patches appear in the middle of the carpet, it means the plant has been watered from above, overwatered, and is not getting enough fresh air. Thanks to its excellent cold hardiness, it can often also be grown outdoors in rock gardens during winter (it can even overwinter under snow), but indoors it will thrive in enclosed glass terrariums, where it will have excellent company and a perfect microclimate. When repotting, use a light, peat-based but well-draining houseplant potting mix.

📦 Pick it up promptly! When the package has been delivered, collect it the same day. Do not leave the package in the parcel locker overnight! Cold and heat can damage the plants and predatory mites.
