Sulcorebutia (Sulcorebutia heliosoides / Rebutia heliosoides)

This extremely rare, miniature, and visually flawless cactus Sulcorebutia (also called Rebutia) is a real treat for sophisticated cactus and succulent collectors! Its name (heliosoides) is related to the sun, and rightly so – its small, spherical stem is densely covered with fine, light, comb-like spines, giving it a neat, almost velvety, and geometrically perfect texture. Properly cared for and correctly overwintered, this inhabitant of the Bolivian mountains will reward you in spring or early summer with stunning, bright (usually yellow or orange) flowers, often nearly the size of the cactus itself! It is slow-growing, space-saving, and extremely hardy houseplant that will add a desert, sculptural, and botanically valuable natural accent to any interior. It is an ideal and joy-inducing gift for anyone who appreciates nature’s perfection and tends to forget to water their plants!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

• ☀️ Light: Maximum bright light and DIRECT sunlight! This is the main secret to this cactus’s survival and flowering: it vitally needs a large amount of sun. A south or southeast-facing windowsill is absolutely the only right choice. In too dark a place, it will lose its perfect spherical shape, become unsightly and stretched out (thin as a cucumber), and never bloom.

• 💧 Watering: Rare but abundant during the active growing season (spring and summer). Allow the soil to dry out completely and thoroughly between waterings! Since this cactus tends to develop a thick, tuberous root, it absolutely cannot tolerate root rot from standing water, which will literally turn the plant into a soft, rotten mass within a few days.

• 🌡️ Temperature/Overwintering: In summer, it literally loves heat and very dry, fresh air (it can be kept outdoors on a sunny balcony). However, the biggest quirk of this plant is overwintering: to form flower buds the next year, it must have a complete rest period in winter! From November to March, it is best placed in a cool, bright room (ideally around 5–10°C) and watering should be completely stopped.

• 🐾 Pets: Friendly. The plant is not toxic, but keep in mind it is still a cactus with dense spines that can cause mechanical injuries to curious cats and dogs.

🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:

• The sunniest and warmest windowsill (south-facing window) – this is an absolute prerequisite for the plant to maintain its spherical shape and delight with flowers!

⚠️ Note: Cacti are living organisms, so each specimen, its spine density, and flower color may vary slightly. It is important to know nature’s secrets: if you notice that during the winter months (when you do not water the cactus) it slightly "shrinks" or becomes a bit softer – don’t be alarmed and don’t start watering it desperately! This is a completely normal rest period process, and in spring, when watering resumes, it will swell again and become firm. When repotting Sulcorebutia (you might have searched for it as Solcorebutia), it is strictly forbidden to use standard houseplant soil! You MUST use an extremely lean, mineral, and sandy cactus substrate, with at least 50–70% made up of fine gravel, pumice, perlite, and sand, ensuring perfect water drainage and a deep pot for its thick root.
