Exotic and provocative stapelia (Stapelia divaricata)

Get ready to bring an absolute botanical avant-garde into your home or office, the bold spirit of the South African deserts, and one of the most provocative wonders of the houseplant world – the stunning Stapelia (Stapelia divaricata)! This masterpiece of nature is a real find for lovers of unusual, sculptural forms and botanical experiments. Its everyday calling card is its firm, fleshy, light green and upright finger-like shoots (completely without sharp spines!), which visually resemble deep-sea corals. But the real magic and the main goal for houseplant enthusiasts begins when this plant decides to bloom, producing a completely alien-looking, fleshy, five-pointed star-shaped flower! It is now nicely grown, healthy and extremely compact, measuring 10–15 cm in a classic 8.5 cm pot. It is the most intriguing, exotic gift with the biggest surprise factor for succulent collectors and anyone who wants a striking, bold conversation piece in their space!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • ☀️ Light: Abundant bright light and a little direct morning or evening sun! This is the secret to this succulent’s firm shape and flowering: it needs excellent lighting. However, protect it from the scorching midday summer sun (on a south-facing windowsill), which can burn the shoots or turn them a stress-induced reddish or purple hue. A bright east- or west-facing windowsill will be absolutely ideal.

  • 💧 Watering: Extremely infrequent, minimal, and with surgical precision! Water the plant thoroughly, but ONLY when the soil is completely, 100% dry all the way down to the bottom of the pot! It absolutely cannot tolerate its roots sitting in standing water in the saucer. During the winter months (the dormant period), watering should be reduced to an absolute minimum, allowing the plant to rest in a cooler room.

  • 🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: A heat lover in summer! During the active growing season, it thrives in any room temperature (+20°C to +28°C). This plant categorically hates misting – dry indoor air is absolutely perfect for it, because excess moisture between its thick stems will quickly cause rot.

  • 🐾 Pets: Pet-friendly / Non-toxic. Stapelia stems themselves are non-toxic and completely safe to have in your home with curious cats and dogs.

🏠 BEST ROOM:

  • Bright and sunny windowsills, desks directly beside windows, and succulent shelves, where this structural accent will receive the light it needs.

  • Modern, minimalist or eclectic interiors, where unusual, sculptural natural forms serve as an independent room design element.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Height: 10–15 cm (compact, upright finger-like stems, which begin to form a dense clump as they grow).

  • Pot diameter: 8,5 cm.

⚠️ A note and a reality check about stapelias: Plants are living organisms, and when growing this natural wonder, you should be prepared for its provocative nature! The most important botanical fact: stapelia's star-shaped flowers smell, but NOT like roses! To attract their main pollinators (flies) in the wild, the flower (at the peak of its bloom) releases a distinctive scent of rotting meat. Don't worry - it's strongly noticeable only if you put your face right next to the flower or keep it in a very small, unventilated space. It's a fantastic and intriguing botanical spectacle worth experiencing at least once in your life! Secondly, as the plant grows, it naturally spreads outwards. It's perfectly normal for the largest, oldest stems to eventually lean horizontally toward the ground or hang over the edge of the pot - this is the naturally creeping/trailing habit of stapelias, not a disease or weakness. When you repot it in the future, BE SURE to use an extremely coarse, mineral-rich and especially fast-drying cactus substrate (a pure mineral mix is ideal, or soil generously mixed with sand, pumice and perlite).

🌡️ COLD TIME! If the outside temperature is below +5°C, be sure to add a heat pack to the order so that plants and predatory mites do not freeze on the way.

❄️ In cold weather, we recommend choosing Smartpost parcel lockers, as they provide indoor delivery, reducing the impact of low temperatures on the shipment.

⚠️ Important about the heating element! ‼️ 1 heating element per 1 order – it is not necessary to put one for each plant. ‼️ Provides heat for up to 72 hours. Without a heating element – we do not take responsibility for frozen plants and predatory mites.

📦 Pick it up promptly! When the package has been delivered, collect it the same day. Do not leave the package in the parcel locker overnight! Cold and heat can damage the plants and predatory mites.
