Latvian winters are a challenge not only for us but also for our tropical houseplants. Dark days and dry air from radiators are the main reasons why plants start to wither. But don’t worry – with a few care adjustments, your home will stay green all year round.
Why does the air become an enemy?
During the heating season, the relative humidity in apartments often drops below 20%, while most houseplants feel comfortable only at 50-60%.
-
Solution: Group plants together (they create their own microclimate), use a humidifier, or place containers with water near radiators.
-
Misting: It only helps briefly, so it’s better to give plants a shower once a month.
Searching for light
In December and January, there is too little light even by the window.
-
Move the plants: Place them as close as possible to the south-facing window.
-
Clean the dust: Dust on leaves blocks light. Clean leaves = more efficient photosynthesis.
The golden rule of watering: Less is more
In winter, plant metabolism slows down. They are "sleeping".
-
Before watering, always check the soil. If it is moist 3-5 cm deep, do not water!
-
Important: Use only room temperature water. Cold tap water can cause root shock.
Plants-plants.lv Expert advice: "Stop fertilizing until March. Plants don’t need a growth stimulus in winter; they need rest."
